April 20th Class

Beth, brought a Agnes today (Chicken - i'm not so sure if that's his name).
We sat around, trapping the chicken in the middle.
He was hilarious!

We also talked about the New Media scavenger hunt assignment, and gave us more idea about what to do with our final project.

Towards the end of the class, we watch Joe's Apartment.
I had seen the movie a lot of times so, 20 minutes before the class ended I decided to leave the class.

New Media Scavenger Hunt.

What is New Media?

When people refer to new media, people think of television, music, web design or anything that utilize a computer or computers.
New Media is used in our daily lives. We get the news from television or internet which is considered as new media, in fact new media has change our way of living. New Media has a enormous impact to our lives and without new media technologies will not evolve.

What is Innovation?

According to Merriam-Webster, innovation is
Main Entry: in•no•va•tion
Pronunciation: "i-n&-'vA-sh&n
Function: noun
1 : the introduction of something new
2 : a new idea, method or device

I found the kiosk just outside Castleton Mall is a good New Media sample. I think another new media sample that uses a computer that most people will not find new media is the fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas.

1. Who did it?
Collaboration between Mr. Wynn and the WET Design.

2. How did they do it?
Drawings were prepared that outlined the feature's form and
location. They defined its position in relation to the hotel, its
center point of focus, as well as its breadth and presence on
the lake. A series of alternate layouts of the fountain's shape
were presented to Mr. Wynn, all of them designed with the
feature's animation in mind. The plan of the feature was
driven by WET's objective of creating an instrument capable
of producing, when choreographed, as much fluidity,
variation and range of expression--from grand gesture to
subtle nuance--as possible. The soul of the fountain's form,
and the motive for the selection of technologies, was that of
flexibility and variety. This ensured that the feature would
effectively play to the varying musical styles and idioms in
an ever-growing library of musical selections.

WET designed and manufactured a collection of
technological devices specifically for the Bellagio. The
objective, as with the form of the fountain, was that of
versatility and breadth. By including the Shooter technology,
the fountain could integrate with the more rythmically driving
passages in the music. Both MiniShooters® and
SuperShooters® (driven to record setting heights of over 240
feet) were included to respond to both commanding and
delicate aspects in the music. The pulsing character of the
Shooters would create the feature's spirals, linear passages,
and high-speed chases.

3. For whom did they do it?
Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas

4. How might you be able to use what you learned about this innovative use of new media to help you when doing your final project?
Planning and integration of different types of media such as music, and synchronization of different medias.

The Project

I was not in the class on April 13th.

I don't really know what i'm supposed to do with the project. I guess, I am not understanding the assignment.
I know how attending the class is very important to progress of this course, I realize even missing a class is already too many class missed. You get lost and you get behind, then it stress you out to get caught up.

What the Bleep!

This is a fascinating film to me, but I think it's not for everyone. This film combines drama, computer animation and interviews with scientists, doctors and spiritual teachers, to present a view of reality that is, a radical departure from the normal five-sense perception of reality. We learn that there is much more to life than meets the eye,and that the universe is a living organism, in which nothing happens by accident, and every event, especially our thoughts, effects everything else.

Client Exercise

March 30th Class

Today was a short class. Beth talked about her design on Photoshop as a sample for our final research project. I thought the design is pretty cool. We talked about the classes final project apart from the research project. She also gave us an assignment about how to design for a client.

Any idea inspired by the word Fluid?

A few. When I think of Fluid, it think of smooth flows, subtle motion, powerful as energy giver, beauty and importance. I could incorporate some of these ideas to my final project. Giving my final project a consistent flow and subtle changes could make my final project easy to view, to read and to understand. Embedding a little of attractive graphics could get my audience attention, and adding some videos and audio could enhance my audience experience.

Third Day

My word (FLUID) came to my mind a couple of times today. I first thought about it while designing a website for a client at work. They mentioned something about text flow of the website, and I thought of fluid. Another thing, I choked on my snack and I thought of fluid. Nothing too creative really, just normal stuff. :)

Day 2

Today I woke up, took a shower and look through the mirror and saw my word. I reminded myself to write down something that brings that word to my mind. While at work today, I was a little a bored so I took a stretch break and went online to see what's going on today in the news. Well, FLUID came to my mind when I saw what is going on in North Dakota. Record Flood.

Fluid: Day 1

Honestly, the FLUID didn't even come to my mind at all today. I've been thinking and stressing about looking for a new job. My current job blows. Yeah I like what I do, but with the economy like this, my hours has been cut drastically. I guess I should say, it's the Fluid of the economy.

and the Word is...

FLUID

March 23rd class

Today we went around the class to talk about our experiences with assignment that was given before the spring break. Unfortunately, after my last class the week before spring break, I decided that I will not check my email and/or look through oncourse, and caused me to missing the assignment. Beth decided that since a lot of the students couldn't turn in the assignment, to give us a chance to experience the randomness assignment.

After that, we spend the remaining of the time with a group to create something random and crazy.

March Ninth's Class

Today, Beth is sick so we get the time to do all our projects from different classes or basically do what we want for the rest of the afternoon. Im a bit stress out from all the assignments this week from different classes so I am going to spend my time and working on those assignments.

Thanks!

What if, final project.

If you read the previous post I decided to change my idea for Final Project. and here are 50 what ifs for that.....

What if I decided to use 50 pictures for the entire presentation?
What if I decided to use 1000 pictures for the project?
What if I do not use music for this project?
What if I don't have Photoshop to manipulate the images?
What if Adobe Premiere was harder to learn or use than I thought?
What if I create a slide show?
What if I use my friends voice for voice over?
What if the entire presentation is about 5 minutes?
What if I didn't have high resolution images?
What if the project didn't make sense?
What if I added the name of places on the pictures?
What if I added a map, showing the way we were heading?
What if I include a picture of my me and friends in the road trip instead of just scenery?
What if I have hard copy images that I wanted to use?
What if I desaturated the images?
What if my entire video is in black and white?
What if I don't use a voice over?
What if I use Bon Iver song as a background song?
What if I made half of the video in black and white and the other half in color?
What if I don't include the location of the images?
What if I ask my roommates for some ideas?
What if I create a story?
What if the story is not accurate?
What if What if instead of video I create it using flash?
What if I manipulate each images in photoshop?
What if the background music is louder than the voice overs?
What if I create a frame for the video?
What if I animate the car?
What if I created an image gallery instead?
What if I just talk about the images?
What if I use the music of MGMT?
What if it takes me a very long time to create this project?
What if I create a fun video?
What if I create a sentimental video?
What if I use a lot of bright colors?
What if the theme is not about the trip?
What if I use some unfocused images?
What if I scan some hard copies of the images?
What if put the project online?
What if put the project on a CD?
What if the project didn't turn out how I wanted to look?
What if I sync the images transition with the music?
What if I don't use any background music at all?
What if I use looping music?
What if the final file turn out to be an extremely big file?
What if the resolution is small?
What if my peers didn't like my idea?
What if my professor didn't like my idea?
What if my computer broke while working on this project?
What if my computer crash and lost all my files?

Final Project - change of idea

Originally my idea is to create my personal portfolio website integrating all the different types of media i've learn. I decided to change my final project idea when I tried to clean up my computer, and I realized I've taken so many pictures during my road trips without destination. I've never really seen the entire collection of pictures, so it gave me an idea to share the images and stories of the images to this class as a final project presentation.

Basically, I am going to collect images from the trip and kinda create an animatic version with some voice over comments as well as some background music, which hopefully will enhance the experience of my final presentation.

Another reason for this change of idea for final project is, I wanted to learn more using the video software that I am not quiet familiar with (Adobe Premiere), I hope this project will enhance my knowledge of the software.

March 2nd

Today I couldn't come to class due to my schedule,
I hope I didn't miss a lot today.

If you are reading this and you were class today,
please let me know what you guys did so I have an idea.
Thanks.

The Republic

Two semesters ago, I took a philosophy course and I remember talking about this particular subject. I could not completely understand the entire dialogue but I remember reading about this.

The Republic, is Plato most outstanding work from what I was told. The dialogue discusses and deals with questions of virtue, justice, wisdom, courage, and government.

Plato was student of Socrates and is heavily influenced by him and with his writings and ideas.
In this dialogue, he questions what is good and what is bad, what is moral and not, what one ought to do. This dialogue also explains Plato's concept of FORMS.

Response to class 6

Today in class, Beth showed us this thing which I believe is called the singing bowl. I thought it was an instrument to grade and chop garlic but I was wrong. She said the singing bowl help her relax. I believe that. I feel that the sound the singing bowl create, creates a zen feel that helps the body and mind relax.

Also, today we went around the class to talk about our final projects. We got into groups and talk about what we're planning to do for a final project. My original idea is to create and update my website but now I'm having second thoughts. If I find a better, more creative idea for final project I will definitely write a blog about it.

Bliss

This weeks assignment is to spend three hours of my time doing what makes me happiest. Over the past weeks i've been busy and somewhat stress out with work, and some personal things. I recently obtain a citizenship with the US, that one gave me a big relief, but not all.

This week I spent the three hours of my time doing absolutely nothing. I decided to be lazy, relax, and re-energize by watching a stupid funny movie. I've always wanted to have some personal time off from doing homework, and/or work, just basically do something that will not involve anything where I have to force myself to think.

After the movie, I decided to read small part of the MTIV book I have bought for N485 class. Since I paid for the book, I might as well read it, maybe i'll learn new things. After reading a few pages I decided to take a nap. That was a great relaxing day for me.

FINAL PROJECT
I've always wanted to re-design my Web site, I just didn't have the motivation.
My personal Web site is outdated and needs a total overhaul.
I feel that to make my personal Web site as my final project will help me and motivate me to start and finish re-building my Web site.

No Class

I didn't check my email before I came to the class.
I went and spend about 10 minutes waiting for the class before ours to finish.
The professor came out and asked what time our class starts, and I responded "3".
Few minutes later, I checked my email and saw Beth's message.

Good Day.

Plastic or Paper

I missed the class yesterday, therefore, I don't really know what I am supposed to do with a plastic bag or a paper bag.

But since, Beth announced at the beginning of this semester that we can basically do whatever to our assignment. I decided to bring a paper bag with me wherever I go and pick up trash or anything that interest me and put it in the bag.

It was kinda cool because I accidentally clean my house by picking up all the trash my dogs were creating and found somethings in the house.

Yesterday's class

I probably missed a lot yesterday.
I wasn't feeling too well.
I think it's probably because of the weather changes from bitterly cold to warm or even the pressures.

Senseless!

Senseless...

I decided to temporarily eliminate my sense of hearing for 2 to 3 hours on Friday while at work.
All five senses are very important on everyones every day's life. Without sense of hearing it is difficult and challenging to do what I normally do on my daily routine. My drive to work was boring since I normally tuning in to the radio or listening to CDs.

Most people will take the five senses for granted until they finally learn how important the five senses are.

- If I could create a new type of sense it would a sense to understand what my dogs are saying to me.

Peace Offering?

I agree with Pascal but a little twist, lets invite them in and promote "Seeing Sideways". That way they understand why we're doing what we're doing. We can explain to them that this class is not just an ordinary New Media class or any other class. To me this class feels like a hybrid of artistic creativeness on steroids (for New Media) plus free thinking, which I will definitely need.

"What does it mean to leave someone with a really bad feeling?"
Sometimes people can't control how they feel. They've learned to react in certain circumstances at a very young age or by instinct. I personally feel that I would rather not show how I feel (If it's negative feelings) to the entire class because, 1) I am that type of person, 2) Everyone looks like they were having fun, and morally for me I cannot spoil that fun because laughter is contagious, 3) Feeling bad will eventually pass unless there will be bad consequences in the future, then you really have to stand up for what you think is right.

Today is weird

Today we learned about Creat.... Innovat... Inqui.... which led to "What If?" assignment.
We talked about "What Ifs?" and talked about previous assignment also.
Towards the end, it felt kinda weird.

Honestly, I felt bad about what we did with the chairs in class for the next class.
I know we're doing this as an art, and it's supposed to be fun, but I didn't feel that way. There's always a way to create or be creative without affecting other people. It makes me feel kinda disrespectful and rude.

So, here's what we did with the chairs hopefully, the class after didn't have to use hammer or other tools to disassemble the chairs.

January 26th Class

Today, We had to go around class and talk about our Egg assignment. Some of the people in class did some very creative stuff with their eggs. We Also went around and talk about the round things we've seen. All in all, I think the class today was kinda fun, although like myself, I feel that people are still pretty shy to open up.

Egg Assignment

As i've mentioned from my previous post, I accidentally left my egg in the car during the time when we had all the negative temperatures. I've notice that the egg expanded a bit and created a crack of shell exposing the white part of the egg. I've tried to peel off the shell because I though it would be cool to see a frozen egg intact but it was harder than I thought. My plan for this assignment after I found my egg frozen was to keep it frozen, peel off the shells, and watch the frozen eggs defrost, and take pictures in a time-lapse way.

I thought it was cool to see the time-lapse images of the frozen egg back to a thick sticky liquid substance in 2 hours.

New Beginning....

So, I missed the first posting assignment which sucks but anyways how do you guys feel about the new President sworn in yesterday? I was really excited about it, but I had to work so I didn't get to see the inaugural but I listened to it online. When I got home, I watched CNN for the longest time, and then I realize I missed my first assignment for this class.

I couldn't think of what to do with the egg assignment at first. Right now, the EGG is in the freezer in my house. I left the egg sitting on the passenger sit of my car when we had that negative temperature, then that gave me an idea on what to do with the EGG.

More info later. hint: the egg is frozen
